The pair of paintings that we present to you belong to the most classic genre painting of the Dutch Golden Age, where the author was inspired by everyday life for the subjects of his works; in our case we see a domestic interior with an old woman watching her grandson capturing a mouse, while in the second work we are in front of a haberdashery window, with the old woman showing the boy the products to offer for sale.
The works, of exquisite quality, are to be placed in the production of a Flemish artist active in the 18th century, inspired in his work by the works made famous by the great master Gerrit Dou (Leiden 1613 - 1675), one one of the most influential Dutch painters, pupil of Rembrandt from 1628 to 1632, when he decided to become independent with his own studio in Leiden.
Exhibitor of a refined painting, characterized by a very precise way of painting in small format and with extraordinary attention to detail, his fame extends beyond the borders of his hometown, thanks to a particular illustrative typology of paintings, defined “niche images”.
Indeed, the painter liked to immortalize scenes of everyday life, characterized by the presence of an illusionist frame made up of an arched window, an unusual expedient that allowed the protagonists to find themselves suspended between the domestic dimension and the outside world, involving the viewer most involved in the scene represented. .
Among the authors who found in Dou a real source of inspiration we can cite Louis de Moni (1698 - 1771) who, although bringing a certain personalization to the works, often took up the subjects, especially in the initial phase of his career. .
The pair of paintings is completed by 2 gilded wood frames and is sold accompanied by a certificate of authenticity in accordance with the law (FIMA)
