The artwork
Painting oil on copper of Flemish school of the mid-eighteenth century from measures of 50 x 40 cm without frame and 68 x 58 cm with frame of XVIII century.
The story of the Assumption of the Virgin develops in the same way as the death of the virgin: the source is the transitus Mariae gradually enriched with additions and interpretations.
In this Flemish school painting we can see how the painter tried to tell the essential, that is, the scene of the Assumption particularly important for the Catholic world with Mary, who is brought to heaven by a series of angels who raise her to heaven; even at the time of the Assumption we can see how the author manages to give Mary an attitude of devout trust in the divine value.
The motion of the clouds has various functions; underlines the ascensional motion of Mary, opens up to indicate the way to heaven. Meanwhile the angels scatter the sepulcher with white roses: the rose is the Marian flower par excellence. Even at the time of the Assumption Mary presents the long hair symbol of virginity.
The most important part of this subject is its symbolic part: in fact, when the apostles dispersed themselves throughout the world, Mary expresses the desire to see again the apostles who gather around Mary. Without any pain Mary falls asleep and rises into the sky accompanied by angels while the apostles painted in various positions and all with suffering faces show all a contrite expression of love and sweetness for Mary, the last true symbol of Christianity with touching and poetic moments and others more classics.
Painting of considerable intensity and manner, the author succeeded in combining a series of admirable characters in a copper of medium - small size; the painter portrays all the protagonists in different poses, not weighing down the scene, but skillfully mixing their actions with a warm, lively, emotional chromatic palette capable of perfectly explaining the love and the sweetness of the scene represented.
