In the manner of Pier Leon GHEZZI (Rome 1674 - 1755 Rome)
Wore a full-length man, a tricorn under his arm, sword at his side. Farinelli?
Pen and brown ink, brown wash
19.5 x 9.5 cm
Cut at all four corners, small spots.
Ghezzi cannot be retained because his line is drier, without the use of wash and the drawing takes substance mainly through the interplay of hatching. A style much more focused on the line than ours even if the influence of this great cartoonist is undeniable.
Our drawing is more in the style of the Venetian School and is reminiscent in its treatment of the drawings of Tiepolo.
See: Giovanni Battista Tiepolo: wash treatment, drawing of elongated and almost twisted hands quite similar in our opinion:
Concerning the identification of the character represented, we propose the name of the most famous castrato: Farinelli (1705-1782). The stretched physique, the high forehead, the mouth with the lower lip very set back as well as the affected pose of the character remind us irresistibly of this artist.
Photo n ° 11: Here is a drawing by Antonio Maria Zanetti. Posture and treatment are very similar even if the artist did not use wash but rather a play of hatching and dry lines. The physical connection is disturbing with our drawing. Apart from the elongated character of the character, we note the same mannerism in the port of the hand. The forehead high enough and the chin tucked in enough in both cases:
Here is a set of drawings that explain our opinion on identification with Farinelli:
Of course this only remains an opinion and yours is very welcome.
