We present to you a unique work, both for the format of the extended visual angle, which allows us to savor this naturalistic panorama in an extremely realistic way, and for the represented theme, namely the baptism of Christ in the Jordan by Jean-Baptiste.
The work, which is part of Flemish Mannerism in the 16th century, recalls, both for its compositional typology and for the details, the works of the Flemish Karel van Mander (1548-1606), one of the representatives of late Dutch Mannerism . In his painting, in which he prefers biblical and mythological themes, the figures, stylized and of Italian taste, follow the taste precepts of the so-called Haarlem Academy.
The result is a very sophisticated, elegant and cultivated painting, intended for a collection devoted to classical culture and Roman art with a taste for the Renaissance. Our work is a perfect example.
Going into the detail of the painting, the narration of Baptism is however only a pretext which allowed our painter to create the decor of an idyllic decor, where the characters seem to live in a dreamlike and timeless atmosphere: the placid flow from the Jordan it guides the gaze to the depths of the landscape in which the architecture of the city of Jerusalem is recognized. The large spaces filled with serene but lush nature allow our painter to show his great landscape skills.
The river meanders between jagged banks, contained by green banks, dotted with undressed figures, women and men, concentrated to observe towards the Savior and identifiable as the beginners intended for baptism. The bodies are exposed with great naturalness, where nudity is conceived as a symbol of virtue, truth and innocence, recalling the nudity of the progenitors when they lived in earthly paradise, before the original sin.
The paint is in excellent condition.
The painting, like all our objects, is sold with a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law (FIMA - CINOA)
