Ludovico Cardi, called Cigoli (Cigoli San Miniato 1559 - Rome 1613), awarded to
Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine of Alexandria in the presence of San Sebastián
(by Antonio ALLEGRI, known as CORREGGIO)
early 17th century (1609-1613)
oil on canvas
Provenance: Private Collection
with frame 130 x 125
The proposed painting is from the homonymous work of Antonio Allegri (Correggio 1489 circa 1534) kept at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Painted in 1527 for the doctor Francesco Grillenzoni of Modena, the canvas has been an exceptional success and fame since the 16th century.
For this reason, the work has fascinated many artists, who wanted to pay tribute, often to meet the demands of the most famous art collectors of the time, who wanted to own their own copy.
Among the most famous names: Giulio Cesare Procaccini, Annibal Carracci, and Ludovico Cardi, called "Cigoli", he replied that the different versions, the most famous is now preserved in the Museo Civico di Pistoia (see photos in detail ).
A scrupulous stylistic and comparative analysis of our painting (datable at the beginning of the 17th century), confirmed the attribution to Ludovico Cigoli. This attribution can be confirmed by the remarkable results with the last phase of his pictorial career, coinciding with his transfer to Rome, where he remained until his death.
The work follows a carefully studied plan of great refinement: the pivot of the painting is represented by the three hands of the Virgin, the Child and the very young Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The scene represents the moment when the Child Jesus marries Saint Catherine with a ring, a symbol of Faith. All eyes converge on this narrative and emotional pivot, including that of San Sebastian, recognizable by the arrows in his hand and alluding to his martyrdom. In the background on the right, we can see the scene of the saint's martyrdom.
Santa Caterina wears an elegant brocade silk coat from which emerges the handle of a preciously decorated sword.
The canvas, in excellent condition, is accompanied by an original frame, lacquered black with golden racemes.
Like each of our subject, the work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
