We present this pair of prestigious oval-shaped mirrors (of which a second pair is also available, link: https://www.antichitacastelbarco.it/it/prodotto/coppia-di-grandi-specchiere-in-legno-dorato- -laccato-ed-intagliato - ii-ii- ), of excellent executive level, which interprets the Italian Baroque period in an exemplary manner.
The works are in carved and gilded wood with a black lacquered background, richly adorned with a deep sculpted volute with particularly vigorous leaf motifs, crowning and lateral ends decorated with heads of cherubs.
This type of acanthus mirrors with boldly carved volutes was produced in various centers of Italy, notably in Lombardy, Veneto and especially Rome, from the 17th century onwards.
Our works in particular, which show a clear and unmistakable Baroque taste, are attributable to Roman workers still active in the 17th century, revealing the direct formal influence of the architects and sculptors of the Bernini school. The density of the decoration and the strong contrast of the blackened wood that highlights the gold sculptures are indeed typically Roman elements in their design, and are characteristic of the evolution of the baroque style of the city in the second half of the 17th century. century.
Even the pomp of the decorations suited the sumptuous interiors of a salon representative of a Roman palace for which they were probably designed, and which must have struck the visitor with the richness of the details and the attention to detail.
The state of conservation is very good. There are small flaws and wear, in the spirit of the times, which do not alter its beauty.
