The canvas represents a fascinating coastal view, where two ships with unfolded sails (called Man-o'-war, literally: man of war), flying the Dutch flag, stand in the center of the composition sailing in the waves of a sea restless.
On the shore in the foreground, the fishermen contemplate the magnificence of the two boats, while in the background a moored boat probably supplies. Finally, to make the atmosphere of great charm, the imposing castle perched on a high cliff overlooking the water contributes.
The composition is one of the most beautiful and important works of the Flemish Peter Van den Velde (Antwerp 1634-1707), famous painter specialized in sea views with ships, master of the Guild of San Luca at only twenty years old .
The taste for display of this magnificent seascape, as well as the thoroughness with which the minimum composition details are represented, first of all those of the two large boats, as well as the definition of the sailors who animate the two ships, confirm the authorship. canvas in the hand of Van den Velde.
The confirmation of the peculiarities of this great master can be confirmed by the comparison with many of his similar works of safe autograph. Among which, in addition to the many kept in various European museums, some have recently appeared on the international antiquities market.
